House Renovation Journey

Documenting the transformation of my home - from discovery to reconstruction

Welcome to the Renovation

When I purchased this house, I knew it needed work. What I discovered after the first few weeks of exploration was that the work was far more extensive than initially anticipated. What started as a cosmetic update quickly evolved into a full structural renovation project.

This blog documents my journey through the chaos, discoveries, and the gradual transformation of this property. From finding unexpected damage behind walls to carefully planning modern installations in a historic structure, every step has been a learning experience.

The Journey Begins

Renovation debris container

55 tons of rubble removed. The dumpster became a symbol of the project's scope. Over the weeks and months, multiple containers were filled with old materials, insulation, and debris as I progressively stripped back the layers of the building to assess what could be salvaged and what needed replacement. This massive undertaking revealed the true extent of the renovation work ahead.

Key Learnings

  • Always Inspect Thoroughly: What looks fine from the outside might hide significant problems
  • Plan for Discovery: Budget and timeline adjustments are inevitable in renovation projects
  • Quality Matters: Using proper materials and professional expertise pays off in the long run
  • Document Everything: Taking photos throughout the process helps track progress and make decisions
  • Professional Help is Worth It: For critical structural work, expertise saves time and prevents costly mistakes

Why This Matters

As a software engineer, I'm accustomed to systematic problem-solving, documentation, and iterative improvements. This house renovation project applies these same principles to the physical world. Each discovery is logged, analyzed, and addressed methodically. The final result will be a well-documented, thoughtfully renovated space that reflects the same care and attention to detail I bring to my professional work.
